HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE

Bridging the Divide

The Port Authority’s first charge was to construct Critical interstate crossings in the late 1920s and early 1930s, including the George Washington Bridge, Outerbridge Crossing, the Goethals and Bayonne bridges. In 1930, the Port Authority assumed control of the Holland Tunnel. and in 1937, the first tube of the Lincoln Tunnel opened.

“The matter of Port development is
critical. It effects housing problems;
it affects the cost of living; it affects
the cost of doing business.”

Alfred Smith, Governor of New York Special message to the Legislature March 29, 1920.

In 1921, the states of New York and New Jersey received consent from Congress to form an interstate agency to develop and modernize the entire port district in order to improve commerce and trade. The port district centers around New York Harbor, and includes 1,500 square miles from both states.
